For the second year in a row, the number of traffic deaths in Ohio has increased. There were at least 1,057 confirmed fatalities in traffic accidents, not counting another 42 which have not yet been confirmed as traffic fatalities. In 2014, the number was 1,008. In 2013, it was 990.
The leading causes of traffic fatalities in 2015 included not wearing a seat belt (60%) and driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs (33%). There was also an increase in motorcycle accidents, commercial vehicle accidents, and pedestrian accidents. The statistics indicate that the majority of these accidents were preventable.
Ohio has been trying to reduce the number of fatalities caused by traffic accidents. For example, there are digital message boards on the highways that encourage drivers to “Drive sober or get pulled over,” and also indicate the number of traffic fatalities that have occurred.
